General Summary

The Traffic Signal Specialist performs advanced level work in the installation, operation and maintenance of traffic signal control devices and associated hardware. Troubleshoots problems in the field, restores operation to traffic control devices that have failed. Receives verbal and written direction from the City Traffic Engineer. The Traffic Signal Specialist plays a crucial role in promoting traffic safety and improving the overall functionality of the city's transportation infrastructure.
 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by incumbents of this job.

    • Provides leadership by directing Traffic Signal Technicians and trainees in installing, modifying, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing traffic signal control equipment and related devices, including street lighting on signal poles, school zone flashers, and lighted crosswalks. Ensures adherence to safety protocols.

·         Determines equipment needs and orders materials and supplies and has project management responsibility. Research and compose specifications for Traffic Signal and ITS Equipment and participates in budget preparation.

·         Develops traffic signal systems by preparing plan assemblies, specifying the necessary components, programing for controllers, and planning for setup of assembly for testing and analysis, testing traffic control devices, programming various types of computerized traffic signal controllers, and writing upgraded specifications. Prepares measurements and documentation in order to determine correct signal timing for new intersections. Assists in problems solving of construction discrepancies whether it is designed or on site. Performs traffic signal plan review and recommended changes.

·         Coordinate crew schedules, workload distribution, and work assignments to optimize productivity and meet established goals.

·         Monitor crew performance, provide feedback, and address any performance or disciplinary issues.

·         Perform maintenance and repair activities on traffic control devices, such as traffic signals, streetlights, and signs, to ensure proper functionality and compliance with regulations.
