The Traffic Engineering Specialist & Traffic Engineering Specialist Senior report to the Assistant Town Traffic Engineer and are responsible for a wide range of traffic engineering related tasks.

The Traffic Engineering Specialist & Traffic Engineering Specialist Sr. communicates with the public and Town employees to respond to citizens’ questions and concerns regarding traffic engineering matters. The Traffic Engineering Specialist & Traffic Engineering Specialist Senior conducts plan reviews for traffic signing and striping, traffic signals, land development projects, and traffic control devices to ensure compliance with applicable Town’s standards, specifications, codes, and ordinances.   The Traffic Engineering Specialist collects field data that may include measuring sight distance at intersections and driveways, signing and striping evaluations, and making field observations on traffic patterns.

Candidates for the Traffic Engineering Specialist position must possess the following requirements:

• High School Diploma or GED.
• Associate's Degree preferred but not required.
• 1 to 3 years of experience in Traffic Engineering Principal or Plan Review.
• Pay range for a Traffic Engineering Specialist is $26.05- $37.77

• Associates Degree in Civil Engineering and Traffic Control Practices or closely related field or 9 years of experience in Traffic Engineering Principles and Plan Review.
• Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.
• ATSSA Certification or IMSA Certification as a Traffic Control Supervisor
• Pay range for a Traffic Engineering Specialist Senior is $28.65- $41.54

• Responds to questions and concerns regarding general traffic safety, parking prohibitions, signing, stripping, school zones, traffic signals, and neighborhood traffic and speed mitigation concerns.
• Communicates with the public and other Town employees regarding traffic Engineering concerns and questions.
• Reviews and analyzes residential, commercial, and industrial land development projects by reviewing applications, plans, sign permits, construction drawings, and related documents to ensure compliance with applicable plans, specifications, codes, and ordinances related to traffic engineering.
• Performs detailed plan reviews and provides comments on traffic signing and striping, traffic signals, and traffic control devices to ensure compliance with applicable Town’s standards, specifications, codes, and ordinances for new land development and redevelopment cases and Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) projects.
• Conducts field studies to determine whether engineering improvement can be made to improve a location.
• Collects Pedestrian and vehicular counts. 
• Measures and documents sight distance at intersections and driveways; makes field observations of traffic patterns, driver and pedestrian behaviors Reviews temporary traffic control plans and provides details for active construction projects and special events.
• Prepares and issues work orders to implement changes related to traffic control devices, traffic signs, striping, and traffic signals.
• Responds to all email concerns and answers questions in a timely manner.
• Other duties as assigned.
