PRESENTATION SUMMARY:
HDR’s local technology experts Mike Barton and Dr. Sanjay Paul will showcase how the local agencies are testing and adopting emerging technologies to enhance safety, mobility, and accessibility in their jurisdictions, as well as preparing themselves for the future. The team will showcase with a few case studies on:
- Emerging technologies for accurate bike and pedestrian detection and counts for efficient signal operations, as well as transportation planning
- Big data and automated signal timing generators for monitoring and enhancing corridor throughput
- Autonomous vehicle shuttle pilot and lessons learned for future ITS planning
- Planning and implementation of electric vehicle infrastructure
- Bipartisan Infrastructure Law funding opportunities
The challenges and lessons learned from these projects will be beneficial for the local practitioners, operation and safety engineers, as well as planners. Sanjay and Mike will then talk about different grant opportunities that are available to the local agencies for adopting technologies and be ready for the future.
Doors will open at 11:30am for lunch and networking, presentation will begin at 12:00pm.
MIKE BARTON BIO:
A graduate of the University of Arizona, Mike is a transportation industry leader that brings 35 years of experience delivering a wide variety of roadway and transit projects. Mike is HDR’s Tucson Office Principal and is a licensed professional engineer and professional traffic operations engineer. His experience includes leading large multidisciplinary projects and balancing the needs of numerous stakeholders and funding partners. His projects have included all aspects of project delivery from planning, construction delivery method, design development, ROW, complex permitting, utilities, and construction phasing; federal, state, local, and private funding; and construction administration. Mike has lived in Tucson for more than 50 years and is actively involved in professional, business, and philanthropic organizations.
SANJAY PAUL BIO:
Dr. Sanjay Paul is HDR’s Desert Southwest Area Traffic Business Class Leader. He is a licensed professional engineer, a professional traffic operations engineer, a professional transportation planner, and a road safety professional. He has been assisting DOTs, MPOs, COGs, and local agencies for approximately 15 years with both traditional and emerging transportation issues including implementation of technologies to enhance mobility and safety for all road users. He is currently serving as an Advisor to the ITS Arizona Board of Directors and the membership chair for the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) Arizona. Sanjay is also serving as a transportation commissioner to provide oversights for the progress of City of Phoenix T2050 plan. He has recently been recognized with the National Transportation Safety Council Award by ITE. Most importantly, Sanjay is a proud dad of two wonderful boys.
