Electrician and Electrician Lead

The Electrician position performs skilled level electrician work in the maintenance, construction, installation, alteration/modification, and repair of electrical systems, equipment, and fixtures in accordance with standard practices of the electrical trade for primarily commercial and industrial applications. These duties are performed in various City departments. Positions may be assigned to shop or field locations. Certain assignments may include electronics metering and instrumentation and working with various voltages. Assignments are received by sketches, blueprints, verbally, and through work orders. This position requires an ability to understand the possible hazards, perform work in high vehicle traffic areas, and coordinate and monitor work performed by Electrician Helpers.

The Electrician*Lead assists in supervising other employees or acts as lead, focusing on safety issues, performing research, providing safety training and researching hazardous materials. This role includes supervisory responsibilities, responsibility for the more complex and technical work situations, more independence with which duties are performed, decision-making authority, the need for considerable additional knowledge and experience complying with safety codes; in addition to the regular duties of an Electrician.

Currently there are vacancies in the Water Services, Street Transportation, Aviation, Phoenix Convention Center, and Public Works Departments. Hiring departments may administer practical examinations or other testing during the interview process.

Streets Transportation Department - Traffic Services Division

Traffic Services Division installs, maintains, and operates traffic signals throughout the City of Phoenix to allow safe and efficient flow of vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians.

The Traffic Signal Shop is responsible for constructing, remodeling, and maintaining signalized intersections. This position will be responsible to provide electrical and construction work throughout the City of Phoenix. General job duties for Electrician include (but are not limited to) installing underground conduits and pole bases, erecting and dressing signal equipment, obtaining and maintaining a commercial drivers license, and installing electrical services.

Current shift hours for the construction crew are from 6:50 AM to 3:20 PM Monday through Friday. The importance of proper traffic signal operation for vehicles and pedestrians requires the availability of Electricians to work scheduled and non-scheduled overtime as necessary. Electricians are routinely called out during off shift hours to repair damaged or inoperative traffic signal equipment.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

Streets Transportation Department - Traffic Services Division

  • Ability to trouble shoot electrical circuits.
  • Ability to understand the hazards and perform work in high vehicle traffic areas.
  • Ability to work “call out” to repair damaged or inoperative traffic signal equipment.
  • Ability to coordinate and monitor work performed by Electricians and Electrician Helpers.

SALARY

Effective Pay Rate July 11, 2022:

Electrician: $30.03 (minimum) - $35.61 (maximum) hourly / $62,462.00 - $74,069.00 annually

Electrician*Lead: $31.14 (minimum) - $37.44 (maximum) hourly / $64,771.00 - $77,875.00 annually

Pension Information

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Completion of a recognized four year electrical apprenticeship program, or equivalent training;
  • Or three years of experience as a skilled electrician.
  • Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.

  • The following list is not all inclusive but are TSA general factors for disqualification of employment for working at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.   • Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record.
  • In addition, individuals may be required to pass an Arizona Department of Transportation physical exam and possess the appropriate commercial driver's license (C.D.L.). Pre-employment drug testing is required for C.D.L. positions. Employees in C.D.L. positions will be subject to unannounced alcohol and drug testing as a condition of continued employment.
  • Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.

The City of Phoenix has paused plans to implement a federal mandate requiring all city employees be vaccinated against COVID-19. This decision comes after a series of legal challenges and a ruling from a federal judge which temporarily halts the COVID-19 vaccine mandate for federal contractors nationwide. If the requirement is reinstated, the City of Phoenix may require new hires to provide proof of full COVID-19 vaccination status as a condition of employment. After a conditional offer has been extended, candidates may request a reasonable accommodation based on a medical disability or for sincerely held religious beliefs.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS – The job requirements listed above, plus:

  • Commercial and/or industrial experience.
  • Experience with NFPA-70 and NFPA-70E requirements.
  • Medium voltage experience (maintenance, installation, equipment, and substations).
  • Experience reviewing plans, making recommendations, and working with contractors and /or service partners.
  • May require working:
    • At heights up to 100 feet.
    • Second or third shift, nights, weekends, and holidays.
    • In small, cramped areas such as ceiling crawl spaces, and equipment enclosures.
    • Outside in a variety of environmental extremes such as heat, cold, rain, air pollution, and dust.

For vacancies in the Aviation Department, preferred qualifications also include:

  • Experience working with series airfield lighting, heavy equipment, and metering devices.
  • Experience in aircraft movement area operations, and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations.

For vacancies in Public Works Department and the Phoenix Convention Center & Venues, preferred qualifications include :

  • Use of aerial equipment at heights of 100 feet may be required.
  • Experience in guest services, providing seamless services with direct customer contact.
  • Experience in lighting maintenance to include ballast, lamps, relays, and computer operation.
  • Experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems and equipment up to 480V.
  • Experience in the installation, repairing, operation, and maintaining of medium voltage (12.47kv, 13.8kv) feeder systems and substations.

For vacancies in the Street Transportation Department, preferred qualifications include:

  • Proficient in blueprint reading and application.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain an Arizona Commercial Driver's License.
  • Distinguish between the full range of colors in the color spectrum to work with electrical wires and / or traffic signal lights.
  • Operate arial lift equipment (buckets) at heights up to 50 feet. Must also meet manufacturer’s weight limit of 300lbs (occupant and tools) while working in the bucket.

For vacancies in the Water Services Department, preferred qualifications include :

  • Experience in industrial process control and industrial motor control.
  • Experience working in large industrial environments, motors, VFD's etc.
  • Experience in Water production, Large Wellfield, or Wastewater treatment plant.
  • Experience in the installation, repair, operation, and maintenance of medium voltage (12.47kv, 13.8kv) feeder systems and substations.
