AZITE Jenny L. Grote Student Leadership Award
Bailey Homan
Xiaobo Ma
The ITE Arizona Section would like to recognize an exemplary undergraduate/graduate ITE student chapter member who has shown exceptional dedication to the transportation profession through ITE service, mentoring, research, real-world experience and/or other noteworthy accomplishments. Initiated in 2016, this award was named in honor of Jenny L. Grote, who spent many years of her ITE service promoting student involvement through participation in an organization that serves all levels of all transportation career paths.
This year we were fortunate to receive another strong slate of candidates for this Student Leadership Award. After careful consideration, the selection committee has chosen TWO outstanding students: Mr. Xiaobo Ma, a graduate student, and Ms. Bailey Homan, an undergraduate student- both from the University of Arizona (UA) in Tucson. Both recipients were entered into the Mountain District Student Award competitions for Undergraduate and Graduate categories, respectively. Please read their accomplishments below and join with the Arizona Board and members in congratulating them in a phenomenal start to their careers in transportation.
Xiaobo Ma, a graduate student at the U of A, is a scholarship recipient in recognition of his strong outreach activities with multiple organizations, his leadership in UAITE student chapter, an excellent academic and research record, and most of all, his focus on the value of Diversity and Inclusion within the student chapter and within the ITE organization. Xiaobo will receive a $1,000 cash scholarship, a $500 travel stipend to attend an upcoming Student Leadership Summit or another ITE conference, and automatic submission as a nominee for the Mountain District Outstanding Graduate Student Award.
In support of Xiaobo’s nomination, Ms. Diahn L. Schwartz, Traffic Manager for the Town of Marana, Arizona, said “I find Xiaobo to be exceptionally courteous, thoughtful and respectful. As I have gotten to know Xiaobo, I have become increasingly impressed with his leadership, his intellect, and his service to the UA…Xiaobo has been active within the UA as a facilitator for K-12 outreach, as an instructor, and as a researcher with Dr. Yao-Jan Wu.”
Ms. Bailey Homan, an undergraduate student at the U of A, is also a scholarship recipient in recognition of her strong outreach activities with multiple organizations, her leadership in UAITE and an excellent academic and research record. Bailey will receive a $1,000 cash scholarship, a $500 travel stipend to attend an upcoming Student Leadership Summit or another ITE conference, and automatic submission as a nominee for the Mountain District Outstanding Undergraduate Student Award.
In support of Bailey’s nomination, the selection committee was highly impressed with her impact on inspiring and educating other students on opportunities available from ITE. She is pursuing a 4+1 program in civil engineering, so she will be able to answer questions that prospective undergraduate students may have about a career in transportation and what skills they will learn along the way. Bailey is able to bridge the gap between the younger incoming students interested in transportation, as well as introducing them to her peers who have more experience in the civil engineering and the transportation program. Bailey also serves as the Women in Civil Engineering President, to achieve greater outreach to the female audience and promote more diversity and inclusion in the transportation field.
Congratulations Xiaobo and Bailey, and best of luck in the Mountain District competition!
