Signal Systems Specialist II

ABOUT THIS POSITION

This position supervises several Signal Systems Specialist I positions who oversee the operation of the City’s Traffic Management Center (TMC) during either the AM or PM shift. Currently, the two shifts are Monday through Friday 5:00 AM to 2:00 PM and 12:00 Noon to 9:00 PM.  The TMC manages the City’s 1,200 signalized intersections through the Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS). Duties include directing Signal Systems Specialists I engaged in such technical duties as signal timing and coordination, traffic signal studies and computerized traffic signal programming and control; proactively overseeing and managing traffic utilizing Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) devices; coordinating and managing traffic for special events and incidents in real-time; and handling complaints and inquiries from the public regarding traffic signal operations such as phasing, timing, or maintenance history. Currently there is one vacancy in the Street Transportation Department. 

This recruitment and any interview process as a result of this recruitment may be used by multiple hiring managers and multiple departments throughout the City to fill any related current or future vacancies; other recruitments and appropriate eligible lists may also be considered.

  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to work with specialized traffic signal software to monitor and analyze signal timing data.
  • Ability to mentor staff. 
  • Ability to manage a challenging workload in a balanced, efficient and effective manner. 
  • Ability build effective relationships and meticulously solve complex problems requiring innovative solutions.

 

SALARY

$60,091 - $91,354 annually. Candidates may be hired above the minimum depending upon qualifications.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Six years of experience in paraprofessional engineering work.
  • One year of basic computer programming or system analysis experience, college-level courses in traffic engineering or other related engineering fields.
  • An equivalent combination of related experience and education may be considered.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS – The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:

  • Three years of supervisory experience.
  • Three years of complex traffic signal operations software program experience.
  • Experience programming traffic signal controllers, traffic signal systems, and other related equipment.
  • Experience working in a real-time traffic management environment such as a traffic management center.
