SALARY: $5,779.32 - $6,851.86 Monthly

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is seeking a Principal Engineer for the Traffic Program located in Cheyenne. As a Principal Engineer, you will contribute to the traffic program’s mission for a safe and efficient state highway system by supervising work and performing work within the geometrics, studies, and marking sections to make traveling safe and efficient.

Cheyenne is a steadily growing community along the Front Range but still true to the Old West's history. The city offers nearby mountain biking, skiing, hiking, fishing, hunting, and other outdoor activities. Cheyenne is also home to the "Daddy of 'em All" – Cheyenne Frontier Days – held every last week of July. Wyoming is one of only seven states with no state income tax. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed at the job level.

  • Supervises and manages personnel in the production of geometrics, studies, and field analysis for construction and maintenance projects
  • Manages the statewide pavement marking program, contracts, and guidance to striping personnel
  • Design and review geometric layouts for intersections, interchanges, passing lanes, truck climbing lanes, turning lanes, acceleration/deceleration lanes, and multi-lane cross overs
  • Oversees and stamps a variety of traffic engineering studies and provides recommendations based on the studies
  • Reviews traffic impact studies, analyzes crash data for impacts on the state highway system, and provides mitigation recommendations
  • Ensures compliance with the AASHTO Green Book, MUTCD, and WYDOT design standards and knowledge of SYNCHRO, VISSIM, and HCS software usage
  • Manages the speed limit inventory database and Traffic Operations Data for input into the annual HPMS report
  • Performs analysis and make recommendations for district operation requests statewide. Ensure consistent, safe, and efficient designs following state & national standards
  • Writes statewide procurement contracts for striping paint and reflective glass spheres
  • Writes special provisions for pavement marking materials necessary for WYDOT construction projects statewide
  • Designs and prepares contract plans for pavement markings projects and construction projects statewide
  • Assists the districts and solve problems related to paint & glass bead application, supply, warranty issues, etc.
  • Provide technical advice and training to district striping crews
  • Reviews access permits and make recommendations to determine compliance with the policy
  • Manages database of accesses and develop methods of maintaining database via coordination with districts
  • Keeps Traffic Program policy manuals updated and maintained
  • Researches topics and present at various meetings and seminars throughout the state, and conduct training sessions and classes
EDUCATION: Bachelor's Degree (in Engineering)
EXPERIENCE: 2-4 years of progressive work experience (in Engineering) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Project Engineer
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Professional Engineer's (PE) License Required at time of hire - (Wyoming PE required within sixmonths of hire date.)
