Job Posting: ADOT Regional Traffic Engineer - Central/Phoenix, AZ

ADOT is seeking a Regional Traffic Engineer. This position will be responsible for traffic engineering and the signing and striping maintenance for the geographic region assigned. They will work under the direction of the TSM&O Operational Traffic and Safety Group Manager but also coordinates extensively with the District Engineer. This position exercises considerable and significant independent judgment within established program parameters, policies and procedures, and is the ADOT TSM&O liaison within the Region. The will also manages all personnel within the multiple units including other engineers, supervisors, and non-supervisory staff involved in traffic engineering, traffic operations, and traffic maintenance. Extended hours may be required. Overnight travel will be required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide administration, leadership, coaching and supervision to multiple units. Manage maintenance plans and budget for the regional signing and striping and signal/lighting units. Recommend improvements to work programs and staffing levels/roles. Work with supervisors on personnel related issues.
  • Represent TSMO within project planning and plan development via coordination with MPD, IDO, and local agencies. Serve on a wide variety of technical advisory committees for projects that will have impacts on safety and mobility. Serve on project selection panels or agency committees representing TSM&O.
  • Manage staff in relation to developer traffic impact analysis and traffic control and striping plans for encroachment permits. Train and develop staff skill set. Negotiate access control and manage access within and adjacent to ADOT rights-of-way.
  • Manage and train staff in traffic signal warrant evaluations, speed studies, pedestrian crossing studies, and recommend corrective measures to existing or potential traffic engineering problems. Regularly review roadways within geographic Region to determine adequacy of traffic operations. Direct staff to write service requests to correct identified issues.
  • Act as a technical expert at public meetings, city council work sessions, and other public forums to address traffic engineering and safety related issues. Speak on behalf of ADOT to provide positions on policy and procedures. Respond to public requests for traffic information and improvements. Provide records, depositions, and testimony in court related to traffic engineering and maintenance on the state highway system within geographic Region.
  • Manage units in review of construction plans for highway projects to ensure proper traffic control, appropriate signing and striping, acceptable traffic operations, and other traffic related features.

 

Requirements Include:
Registration by the Arizona State Board of Technical Registration as a Professional Engineer in Civil Engineering or a closely related field (or eligibility for reciprocity in the State of Arizona).

Preferred Requirements:
Minimum of five years’ experience as a registered Civil Engineer with a primary focus on traffic engineering, traffic operations or safety.
